Music is really good for health. While working on my Laptop I always prefer to run a play-list. I have used these media players and I want to share them with you.
Clementine Music Player : Simply superb ! Nice interface. You can easily add media libraries. It is very easy to create playlists here. I love the "fading duration" feature in this music player.
VLC : All of my friends use this as it is very simple. In fact they learned all keyboard shortcuts for VLC and even tried them on other players and failed.
My favorite features of VLC include subtitle integration, 'always on top' and 'effects & filters'. With Always on top feature you can watch a video while working with other windows.Nice feature for multi-tasking.
Do you know that you can watch YouTube videos in VLC media player without any advertisements ?
VLC works fine on Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android .VLC plays most of the file types which makes it number one media player.Even if you already have VLC in your Computer, try to get a latest VLC download.
Banshee Media Player : Banshee is my best companion. It plays all of my favorite songs for me while i blog.It perfectly fits on my Mint tray making the menu panel beautiful.
Banshee comes for Linux, Mac and Windows.
XBMC Media Center : Don't miss this ! XBMC is a good alternative for Windows media center. Read about XBMC media center features here

I don't know how I have missed this software till last month..(some times we will stick to old softwares as we used to them.....!!)
XBMC will turn your computer into a stunning media center. It is free and open source software available on Linux, Windows, Mac, iOS, android (....almost on every platform)
turn on XMBC and it will go full screen mode to show weather, music, videos,TV shows, RSS feeds from your favorite website. With some plug-ins you can browse the web also. You can see the details of your computer like hardware details, network details etc.
See this video to get an idea about XBMC
I am using this on my Linux Mint OS. I feel that this is a best answer to Windows Media Center available on Windows OS. As an open source project XBMC is getting a lot of support from volunteers who always try to make this more beautiful.
There are beautiful skins(themes!!) available to download for different look.
Try this awesome Open source software for free here
Actually this works as a Desktop Environment for Linux systems. That means you can directly run this media center software without logging into your OS too. Try this If you want to turn your Laptop into a Party music device :)

Most of the people don't use Linux as they feel it is hard to use. Initially even i felt the same but now i am in love with Linux.
I have used different flavors of Linux operating systems including Ubuntu,Fedora,Linux Mint. After testing all of these operating systems I felt very comfortable with Linux Mint.
ADVANTAGES OF LINUX MINT :
1.Ready to use operating system : With built in softwares and plug-ins we can directly use the operating system once it is installed.

- Usually no other Linux operating system gives built in media players where as Mint gives some good options like VLC media player,Banshee media player,Rhythm Box,Gnome Media player, Brasero media player etc and some more media players.
- There is Firefox browser integrated with in the mint Operating system so you don't need to download any other browser as Firefox is the most secured web browser to browse the web.
- No need of installing any drivers for audio and wireless as they all work fine with Linux environments. The advantage of Mint is Wireless connectivity is very fast compared to any other OS including Windows and other Linux OS.So You can start browsing from the next second you log into your OS. Also there is an advantage of Firefox browser in Mint. It starts without any delay in MINT.
- You will get some useful set of softwares along with the OS. The list includes GIMP image editor, Libre Office suit, ThunderBird e-Mail client, Bit torrent client etc
Writing a piece of code is almost same as dealing with your girlfriend. Most of the times you will get an error, then you start debugging it.Sometimes you may get the output first time of compilation itself(never happened to me except for those boring 'hello world' shit !).
How many times you have handled your girl friend without any confusion ? How many times you have implemented a logic with understanding it properly ?
People think that coding is complicated. Watch this amazing video once to cross check your opinion.

Improve your productivity by using these tools |
From the past 2 months I have been using my Laptop for blogging and web browsing in order to make Geeky Brains Blog more useful and productive.
Initially I have struggled to find some time to write this blog as I am working full time in an MNC.But later I have found some useful and productive tools(both online and offline) which helped me a lot to concentrate on blogging alone.
The machine I owned : Dell Inspiron N4050 powered by 2nd generation intel core i5 processor(2.4GHz) + an AMD graphics card which can handle a decent amount of graphics.
So this is not a high end laptop made to deploy in NASA machines but It is still a good computing device which came in my budget.
I use both Linux and Windows on my machine | most of the time I play with my laptop changing different kinds of operating systems. But this has shown a major effect on my productivity in the last month. So i have decided to use Windows 7 along with Ubuntu 12.04LTS which is quite simple and beautiful.
Besides we have a Netgear router installed in our Apartment so that our 4 laptops, A Nokia 820 and 1 ipad mini can share the 15Mbps wifi connection.(Before NetGear Hardware Router I was using Connectify hotspot. Connectify software can turn your laptop into a wifi transmitter)
Coming to the point, Here I will give you some rough ideas which may help you in your day to day computing.
Notepad ++ | This is my favorite text editor I have ever used in my programming life. It supports many languages with auto completion feature. If you ever try to write some code I suggest you to include this tool in your collection. Most of the time I will edit html in this app
DropBox | I drop every important file here. Thus I never lose my important files. Both my Windows and Linux versions contains Dropbox. Using DropBox you can install many apps. (inside dropbox) which are really productive.
If you haven't used DropBox yet then you must try it now to explore the possibilities
ThunderBird : this is an opensource e-mail client from Mozilla foundation.I check all my 4 email account mails here both online and offline. Smart ! is in't it. Then get it here.If you are familiar with Outlook by Microsoft then I can say that Thunderbird is an alternative for it.this works on both Windows and Linux versions.
EverNote : My favorite note taking app. You can use both online and offline once you download it. I also use EverNote Clearly browser extension for reading webpages like an E-book.
Hibernate | I use this in Windows 7 PC when ever I go out from my room for a long time(say 4 hours), So that when I come back to my laptop I can directly start from the point where I have left earlier (Instead You can also go for windows 8 if you can upgrade)
I KISS every thing on my Desktop !!! yeah :) I Keep It Simple and Silly.
I use "Rainmeter" application for customizing themes and skins of my desktop. It will give many more options to make your computer desktop almost like a tablet. Currently I am using a simple & minimalism theme as shown here.
![]() |
Desktop with Rainmeter application |
I use JetClean to clean my registry and maintain all installed software. This will improve the performance of my PC. I suggest you to run this tool frequently to maintain your PC performance.
I use Microsoft paint for my making basic pictures on my blog. I have downloaded and installed a bunch of fonts to make my words beautiful.
I guess this article will help you in some ways (at least one of the above). I am trying to update this list soon. So please keep visiting us.
Be Curious :) Be productive :)
I love Ubuntu font developed by Ubuntu and Google team.So I decided to use it in my Windows PC (dual booted with Linux Mint and Windows 7).
After installing a font you can use it in Applications like paint,MS office etc.
Although this is a very simple task many people never used this previously. So today I will explain how to add your favorite font to Windows PC.
![]() |
add your favorite font to windows PC |
First of all download the font from Internet. Just Google for it, you will find a lot of websites.
Download the fonts as per your wish. You will get a zipped file. Unzip it so that you will get a TrueType font file. Now copy this file and paste it in Font setting panel. To open the font settings follow the path as given below.
Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Fonts
This will look similar to the below picture
adding a font to Windows PC |
Thats all ! Now you can use your font in your Windows PC applications.
If you want to use the change the default Windows font (in File Explorer and other app.s)
Go to the path shown below
Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization\Window Color and Appearance
Now click on Advanced appearance settings. Select item for which you want to change the font. Now choose the font from the drop down list and apply the changes.
change your default font style in Windows 7 |
Now you can enjoy your favorite font in your Windows PC :)
If you have any doubt please drop a comment.
PS : This will also work for Linux distributions. You can double click the truetype font file to install it. It doesn't even take 1 second to finish the installation on my Linux Mint 13.
One of my friend's friend in Facebook wrote some funny quote about YouTube Ads.
Dear YouTube, When You buffer I still Prefer but when ADs buffer, I Suffer :(
But now even though I have a faster internet connection YouTube ads started irritating me.I have to reduce the volume until the ad ends and then again i have to increase it (for my desired video!). Sometimes God(YouTube!!) gives me the "skip ad" button. And here comes the little banner Ads which are damn crazy(most of the times i open the ad instead of closing it!!!)
So for a confusing (and lazy too !) person like me YouTube ADs are almost like a hell.So I have Googled about this issue and found some solutions like browser extensions which actually made the problem more complex (#yeah.some of them are not secure). Then one of friend told me that VLC can play(stream) YouTube videos.
![]() |
Stream YouTube Videos in VLC media player |
I have used VLC all the time in my laptop as VLC is an open source application which runs on almost every platform like Linux,Windows,Mac,Android etc. But i have never used this feature previously.Once I have checked this feature I liked it so much.
How To play YouTube videos in VLC media player:
For this i have used the latest VLC media player (v2.0.5). For some of the older versions it may not work properly so please get the latest VLC media player at videolan.org/
- Open YouTube and copy the URL of the video from address bar(or you can copy the path from share button option also)
- Now open VLC media player and press Ctrl+N (media-->open network stream)
- Paste the YouTube video path here and press stream
PS : this will work fine with any online video. But don't use "https" kind urls which can't be streamed.
Here comes the list of things to do after installing Ubuntu in your PC
1. Install Ubuntu-Tweak : this is an application designed to configure Ubuntu easier for
everyone. It provides many useful desktop and system options that the
default desktop environment doesn't provide.
Just download it and make your Ubuntu as you wish. You can download themes, set default applications etc.
For the people who converted from Windows to Linux, This app helps to tweak some settings like window settings.
2.Remove Shopping lens from search results : While the Search panel for Ubuntu is a cool option some times you may get irritated with online ads from amazon (they are funding Ubuntu !).
So if you dont want any ads disturbing you then go to settings menu and choose privacy options to disable the shopping lens.
3.Get all the media codecs : Due to some license problems Ubuntu can't give inbuilt media codecs in the OS image. But later you can install third party media codecs. To get them please refer to Ubuntu restricted extras
4.Install Cairo-Dock to make your Ubuntu beautiful and browse what ever you want very quickly

Try Ubuntu using Wubi |
If you are trying to install Linux on your PC for first time then I suggest you to use Wubi installer. Wubi is a Windows application to install Ubuntu.
Advantages of Wubi installer
1. Works directly from windows just as any other windows application
2.No partitioning required.(Yes ! the installer will take care of it :) )
3.Dual boot of windows and Linux will be activated by Wubi. This means you can choose either windows or Linux while starting your PC.
4.If you don't like it you can simply uninstall it from your windows control panel.
Also as I have mentioned earlier Ubuntu and Mint are two user friendly Linux distributions. So you can try Wubi to install Linux on you PC
Download Wubi from Ubuntu site or click here . Choose your operating system and click download.
Now run the application to see the following screen.

Choose the drive to install ubuntu |
Here I have chosen C: drive but it is better to choose drive (if you have a minimum 18 Gb space on it). Choose a password to start installing Ubuntu.
Now Ubuntu files will be downloaded as shown below.Once the file is downloaded the installer will expand the compressed files and complete installation.

That's all you are almost ready to use Ubuntu. restart your PC to enjoy Ubuntu :)
We are in a digital world where an operating system is synonymous to human brain. Each Human being thinks in his/her own way. Similarly the Operating systems interpret its tasks in different ways. It is important to choose a wise operating system as per your needs.
Some people who have migrated to Linux from Windows initially feels that Linux is not good as Windows. But this is a wrong perception. The problem is that they will compare Linux with Windows in every aspect. This will finally create a feeling against Linux.
If Windows is the real boss in Operating systems then all the top 10 super computers might have used Windows which is not happening. Linux is leading the super computing field without any competition.
So what's wrong with desktop mode Linux ? Nothing ...but the fact is we are lazy to understand some simple things in Linux. Just because of this reason we are paying a lot of bucks for using an Operating system.
Ok . may be you are still a fan of Windows . But let me try to give some alternatives present in Linux which will definitely fulfill your requirements .
1. Internet :
a). Most of the Linux distributions come with a pre installed Mozilla Firefox browser. As I have previously told it is the best secure browser. You also have Chromium browser which is known as chrome browser in Windows.
b). You can use Skype in Linux. Similar to Outlook in Windows Linux have a free e-mail client called Thunderbird mail. This is a simple to use email client with tabbed browsing.
2.Networking is quite simple in Linux. If you have installed the proper drivers then you can easily create WIFI-Hotspot. Remember in Windows there is a long procedure to create wifi hotspot. Previously I have used Connectify in Windows. But believe me you can simply do this in Linux within 3 steps.
3.Media players : This is one of the reason people don't like Linux. Windows has their own media player pre-installed inside windows OS. Coming to Linux all the codecs are not pre-installed because of some license issues. But you can download them from Ubuntu software center easily. If you want to install a Linux operating system pre installed with all codecs go for Linux Mint. I am currently using it without any issues.RythmBox is quite good.By the way we have VLC available in Linux platform as well. Of course VLC is an open source project :)
4.User Interface: Most of the people like Windows or Mac as they think they are user friendly. But I love Linux since it is most customizable than any other OS. You can use a number of desktop environments. Desktop environment is just like your theme in Windows OS but with a lot of powerful features.
I am currently using Linux Mint Maya edition. Besides I use Ubuntu desktop environment also. You can even choose a number of desktop environments like Mate,Gnome shell,Xface etc.(this list is big...!)
If you love multi tasking then you will love the concept of workspace in Linux environments.
5. Applications :Ubuntu store is very good place to find most of the apps. For programmers and students Linux is a paradise. It has a lots of free applications in every computer language.
6. Don't you like a virus free operating system? Yes, Linux is almost virus free(but not 100%). You dont need to install any anti virus programs and scan your system frequently. Get the latest updates from Linux repository to protect your PC.
7.Graphics : Linux has a variety of graphics editor applications. The list contains GIMP, Inkscape, Kolour paint, Blender etc.
at last I would like to say that Linux is the only operating system in which you can customize any piece you want.
Unlike in Windows where the OS controls the user, here in Linux the user controls the OS.
If you still don't want to try Linux, Then wait for some more posts from this blog.We will make you try Linux.Keep coming here guys :)

Some times it is required keep the PC running even after we go to sleep particularly while downloading some files through torrentz. If you forget to shutdown the PC for long time it will effect the PC and battery(for laptop users) performance.
So Today we will learn a simple task scheduler trick.
Task scheduler is basically used to run both periodical and non periodical tasks by operating system or by the user.We can create any task so that a particular program starts at a particular point of time.
I have created a video on Youtube for Geeky Brains blog Followers. Please watch it in good quality(480p or above)
For your reference I am giving the instructions below
1.Open task scheduler from control panel (control panel-->system and security-->administrative tools-->task scheduler)
2.Click on "Action" button on top left corner.
3.Click on "create basic task"
4. Give some name and description.Give the trigger as "one time"
5.Give date and time (when you want to shutdown your PC)
6.Choose start program.
7.Now click on browse for "shutdown.exe"(Local disc(c:)--->Windows--->system32). Choose it and open.Click next
8.Add the argument "/s /f" (without any quotes)
9.Click next and finish creating the auto shutdown task.
Now you can see your task in "Task scheduler library" by clicking on it.
Note : in the above mentioned instructions at 8th step we are adding the argument /f for force shutdown. It may not be required every time.If some program is continuously running until the time you have mentioned in the task then it will be forcefully closed to proceed the shutdown operation .If you are using windows 7 you can skip it by choice.
The same task can also be done by a simple command in command prompt also. But I have explained this lengthy procedure to introduce the concept of task scheduling to you. With this tutorial you can easily create another task also.
We have created a simple task to shutdown the PC automatically :)
Next time don't leave your PC turned on for a download. Create your own task to do the automatic stuff :)

wait there are more options. Actually there are a lot of options if you have a little time to analyze and configure your system according to you.
If you want to use a free and legal operating system then there comes the open source operating system concept. Personally I am big fan of open source environment.
Linux is one of the leading and powerful operating system which is leading the world in the field of servers and supercomputers. Many people doesn't know the fact that 90% of today's supercomputers run on Linux.Among them the top 10 fastest supercomputers run on Linux. Some of the top companies which uses Linux include Google, Facebook,IBM etc. Linux has such a real time operating distributions which are used by NASA.
Linux is developed by a lot of people in which Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman are two key people. The Kernel of the operating system is written by Linus Torvalds and the remaining part of operating system is contributed by Richard Stallman. Actually Richard Stallman started the movement of open source software by starting the GNU project.
To give you an Idea about the power of Linux you can watch this video from Youtube
Ubuntu has a good graphical interface compared to other Linux operating systems. You can easily replace your windows OS with Ubuntu (again , Its my opinion !)
You can watch this video to know more about the look of Ubuntu

Linux is developed by a lot of people in which Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman are two key people. The Kernel of the operating system is written by Linus Torvalds and the remaining part of operating system is contributed by Richard Stallman. Actually Richard Stallman started the movement of open source software by starting the GNU project.

If you are convinced with Ubuntu you can directly(and legally) download the 750 Mb Ubuntu desktop Operating system and install it. But if you are a hardcore Windows lover then try it by dual-boot method so that you can use both from your PC.
If you are not a Geek then try Wubi , an easy windows installer. Just download the Wubi installer and run it. It will install Ubuntu just as any other windows program.
There is one backdrop of Ubuntu. It doesn't come with preinsatlled media codecs. of course you can find them easily on Ubuntu Software center.
If you want to use a Linux distribution with preinstalled media codecs then go for Linux Mint.
Mint is a simple yet beautiful distribution. it has awesome features like Hot corner(work space switcher) and many more.
